On Tuesday February 20th 2007 well known Barbadian Herpetoculturalist and expert on Reptiles, Amphibians & Invertebrates - Mr. Damon Gerard Corrie - was invited to hold a meeting with Medical Interns at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the Accident and Emergency conference room, the session was attended by 14 Interns from a diverse group of countries ranging from India, Nigeria, Guyana, Dominica, Barbados, Trinidad and the Bahamas; and the session lasted just over one hour from the 4.30 pm commencement time.
Corrie answered many questions and concerns the Medical Interns had about the potential human health risks of various Caribbean species of Reptiles, Amphibians - as well as several terrestrial and Marine Invertebrate species - and a few dangerous coastal fishes found throughout the Caribbean. The session was puntuated with tales of Corrie's wide array of unusual pets he has kept and past experiences in Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad including being bitten by marine eels, various snakes, and being stung by centipedes, bees, wasps and tarantulas (common to almost every other Caribbean island except Barbados) - the stings of which Corrie said were "nothing to worry about"; as well as little known first-hand information he garnered from the research he conducted himself over a 25 year period on the general behaviour and reproductive habits - and ill effects on human beings (with himself being the primary example more often than not) of many of the species covered. It is Corrie's hope that he will be assisted in the production of a booklet identifying all of the most commonly encountered potentially dangerous species of Reptiles, Amphibians, Invertebrates and fishes - that could then be provided free of cost to every Emergency department of every Hospital in the Caribbean as well as to every visitor coming into our countries as a way of protecting them from any unpleasant experience they might have whilst enjoying our natural environments. Corrie is the founder and president of the Caribbean Herpetological Society.
